The spectacular story of Javi Romo. From the Universitat d'Alacant Triathlon team to Astana - Premier Tech.<\/h4>\n

A brilliant triathlete, 9th in the Junior World Championship, 4th in the Absolute Spanish Championship, winner of the Fte. \u00c1lamo International Triathlon, among many other important results, last summer he made his cycling debut in a big way and was proclaimed U23 Spanish Champion, surprising after a breakaway of almost 40 km solo. In 2021 he will debut in the World Tour with Astana alongside Jakob Fuglsang, Omar Fraile, Luis Le\u00f3n or Aleksandr Vlasov, team with which he is committed until 2023.<\/p>\n

From Mobel Sport we wish him all the luck in the world, he already has plenty of strength and quality.<\/p>\n

The Astana team has announced its 6 new signings for 2021, Javier Romo, our triathlete, has been one of them and has signed for three years. In addition the team has signed Italians Samuel Battistella, Matteo Sobrero, Andrea Piccolo, South African Stefan De Bod and Canadian Ben Perry, so he will not be the only new member of the team.<\/p>\n

Javi, born in Villafranca de los Caballeros (Toledo), is aware of what he has come to the team to do, to work hard for the team and to learn. He knows that the first thing is to get by in the World Tour, something different from the few Elite-Sub23 races he has raced so far. At the moment he is already adapting to the team's language, English, and yesterday he showed his joy with this message:<\/p>\n

\"I am super happy to now be part of the team. I am very grateful to get this opportunity. The team gives me the chance and I want to work hard to give back the trust the team gives me. I hope I can step up into the WorldTour, helping the team to achieve victories. I am really looking forward to being part of it\".<\/p>\n

He will not be the only member of the Spanish team either, joining the Izagirre brothers, Alex Aranburu, Omar Fraile, Luis Le\u00f3n S\u00e1nchez and \u00d3scar Rodr\u00edguez.<\/p>\n

The rise of the Baqu\u00e9 Team rider in recent months has been meteoric. He made his debut in a cycling competition at the end of July and in his second cycling race he won the U23 Spanish Championship shortly after.<\/p>\n

Romo stood out as a triathlete, he was 9th in the World Junior Championship and 4th in the Spanish Absolute Championship in 2018. These results allow the new Astana rider to think that the leap \"has not been by chance, but the result of work\", and of his quality.<\/p>\n

His exhibition in the Spanish under-23 Championships reflected his excellent qualities, which he finished in the end of the season with fourth place in the Volta a Valencia and third in the Vuelta a Cantabria. He is now ready for the challenge of the top professional category.<\/p>\n

\"I'm very happy and now I'm assimilating it a bit more. It's a big leap. It's true that a few months ago I wouldn't have imagined it, but it has come about like this,\" says Romo.<\/p>\n

The opportunity to sign for a World Tour team \"was a progressive thing\", with many proposals from the professional environment.<\/p>\n

\"We did a test before I started racing and at the time I didn't think I would get so high. In some outings I met professionals and they encouraged me to compete. I started training on my own bike a few months ago and Caf\u00e9 Baqu\u00e9 gave me the opportunity. Then, I won the Spanish Championship\".<\/p>\n

It all happened in a very short time, but it was not chance that was the determining factor, but the work I had already been doing as a triathlete.<\/p>\n

\"It wasn't just luck. I come from another sport in which I have worked hard. That's why I say it's not so easy and it's not a coincidence. I've found good people who have helped me, but if you don't have the right level, they won't call you, you can't get there\".<\/p>\n

The jump from triathlon to cycling was hastened by the pandemic.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\"There were no triathlon competitions and I had nothing to lose, so I decided to focus one hundred per cent on the bike during these months and luckily everything went well. Maybe without the pandemic I wouldn't have dared to take the plunge.<\/p>\n

From never having competed before to becoming Spanish under-23 champion, a result that didn't surprise Romo either. In triathlon his strongest point was the bike, but he didn't know how far he could go.<\/p>\n

\"I felt I had the level and if it hadn't been in the nationals, it would have been in another race. I think that if you work well and you have the level, it comes out in the end. You look for luck. I'm one of those who think that you either do things or you don't, it's not worth doing them half-heartedly\".<\/p>\n

Now he will have to adapt to professional cycling at the highest level, a process that will take time, although the Spaniard wants to prove his worth from the very first year.<\/p>\n

\"The team knows that I come from another sport, that maybe I need to adapt a little bit, and they have given me the opportunity to be more relaxed. The pressure is on yourself and I want to do well from the first year. I want to work and do my best to do what the team asks me to do\".<\/p>\n

Romo arrives to a team full of Spaniards, in whom he hopes to find support and a good learning environment.<\/p>\n

Although he is from a small town in Toledo, he has been living in Albacete with his brother for a year and a half.<\/p>\n

\"I'm better here for training, more focused. It's almost all flat and with a lot of air. That's the way it is. If I want to do a bit of level, I have the Sierra del Segura and Alcaraz, in the Ri\u00f3par area, it's the area I like best for training\".<\/p>\n

I am really looking forward to being part of it.\u201d Por otro lado tampoco ser\u00e1 el \u00fanico integrante del equipo espa\u00f1ol, se une a los hermanos Izagirre, a Alex Aranburu, Omar Fraile, Luis Le\u00f3n S\u00e1nchez y \u00d3scar Rodr\u00edguez. El ascenso del ciclista del Baqu\u00e9 Team en los \u00faltimos meses ha resultado mete\u00f3rico. Debut\u00f3 en una competici\u00f3n ciclista a finales de julio y en su segunda carrera ciclista gan\u00f3 el Campeonato de Espa\u00f1a sub’23 poco despu\u00e9s. Romo destac\u00f3 como triatleta, fue 9\u00ba en el Mundial J\u00fanior y 4\u00ba en el Campeonato de Espa\u00f1a Absoluto en 2018. Estos resultados le permiten pensar al nuevo corredor del Astana que el salto “no ha sido casualidad, sino fruto del trabajo”, y de su calidad. Su exhibici\u00f3n en el Campeonato de Espa\u00f1a sub-23 reflej\u00f3 sus excelentes cualidades, que termin\u00f3 de certificar en el final de la temporada con el cuarto puesto en la Volta a Valencia y tercero en la Vuelta a Cantabria. Ahora se encuentra listo para el reto de la m\u00e1xima categor\u00eda profesional. “Estoy muy contento y ahora lo estoy asimilando un poco m\u00e1s. El salto s\u00ed que es grande. Es verdad que hace unos meses no lo hubiera imaginado, pero ha surgido as\u00ed”, se\u00f1ala Romo. La oportunidad de fichar por un equipo World Tour “fue algo progresivo”, con muchas propuestas del entorno profesional. “Hicimos un test antes de empezar a correr y entonces no pensaba en llegar tan alto. En alguna salida coincid\u00ed con profesionales y me animaron a competir. Empec\u00e9 a entrenar solo bici hace unos meses y el Caf\u00e9 Baqu\u00e9 me dio la oportunidad. Entonces, gan\u00e9 el Campeonato de Espa\u00f1a”. Todo ocurri\u00f3 en muy poco tiempo, pero la casualidad no ha sido el factor determinante, sino el trabajo que ya ven\u00eda desarrollando como triatleta. “No ha sido solo suerte. Yo vengo de otro deporte en el que he trabajado mucho. Por eso digo que no es tan f\u00e1cil y que no es una casualidad. He dado con buena gente que me ha ayudado, pero si no tienes nivel no te llaman, no puedes llegar hasta ah\u00ed”. El salto del triatl\u00f3n al ciclismo se apresur\u00f3 debido a la pandemia. “No hab\u00eda competiciones de triatl\u00f3n y no ten\u00eda nada que perder, as\u00ed que decid\u00ed centrarme cien por cien en la bici estos meses y por suerte sali\u00f3 todo bien. Quiz\u00e1 sin pandemia no me hubiese atrevido a dar el paso”. De no haber competido nunca a campe\u00f3n de Espa\u00f1a sub-23, resultado que tampoco sorprendi\u00f3 a Romo. En el triatl\u00f3n su punto m\u00e1s fuerte era la bicicleta, pero no sab\u00eda hasta qu\u00e9 punto pod\u00eda llegar. “Me ve\u00eda con nivel y si no hubiera sido en el Nacional, habr\u00eda sido en otra carrera. Pienso que si trabajas bien y tienes el nivel, al final sale. La suerte se busca. Soy de los que piensa que las cosas las haces o no las haces, no vale hacerlas a medias”. Ahora deber\u00e1 adaptarse al ciclismo profesional del m\u00e1ximo nivel, proceso que llevar\u00e1 tiempo, aunque el toledano quiere demostrar su val\u00eda desde el primer a\u00f1o. “El equipo sabe que vengo de otro deporte, que quiz\u00e1 me falta un poco de adaptaci\u00f3n, y me han dado la oportunidad de estar m\u00e1s tranquilo. La presi\u00f3n se la pone uno mismo y yo quiero hacerlo bastante bien desde el primer a\u00f1o. Yo quiero trabajar y hacer lo mejor posible lo que me pida el equipo” Romo llega a un equipo plagado de espa\u00f1oles, en quienes espera encontrar apoyo y un buen soporte de aprendizaje. Aunque es de un pueblo peque\u00f1o de Toledo, reside en Albacete con su hermano desde hace un a\u00f1o y medio. “Para entrenar estoy mejor aqu\u00ed, m\u00e1s centrado. Casi todo es llano y con mucho aire. Es lo que hay.
