20 years have passed since Iván Raña's victory in the Triathlon World Cup
Today marks the 20th anniversary of Iván Raña's victory at the World Triathlon Championships; it was on 10 November in Cancun, a date that marked the beginning of the golden age of Spanish triathlon and continues to drive the careers of several generations of athletes.
We remember the news of that day in various media:

Iván Raña, world champion
Iván Raña wins the World Championships held in Cancún after an exhibition of power and endurance in 36-degree heat.
Iván Raña won the World Triathlon Championships in Cancún with a time of 1 hour, 50 minutes and 41 seconds. The Galician overtook Australia's Peter Robertson, the favourite to win and who was defending the title he won last year in Edmonton (Canada), in the last leg. Raña, at the age of 23, has confirmed himself as the best triathlete on the planet in what is possibly one of the toughest sports in the world. Spanish and European champion, he completed the triple crown in a race in which he went from strength to strength. Briton Andrew Johns completed the final podium in Cancun,...]
The Spaniard finished the 1,500-metre swim in 27th place, a result that he improved considerably when he was sixth at the end of the 40-kilometre bike ride, before overtaking Robertson in the last two laps of the 10-kilometre run. It was with about 800 metres to go that Raña imposed his change of pace to overtake Robertson for good. The competition, which was watched live by some 20,000 spectators, was marked by the strong heat, which reached 36 degrees Celsius, and by the high level of humidity, which reached 95%, very demanding conditions that made the race even tougher and took their toll on all the participants.

Raña has already reached the top
The Galician athlete, fifth at the Sydney Olympics and already European champion this year, wins the top world title in Cancun.
Peter Robertson, the outgoing champion, accepted his defeat and simply said: 'Ivan Raña has had a perfect race. For years, in the corridors of world triathlon, this warning had been heard: watch out for Raña, watch out for Raña, it is the youth that comes to dominate everything, watch out for Raña. And Raña, named Iván, a Galician from Ordes (A Coruña) and resident of Santiago de Compostela, a young man of 23 years, did not stop coming, did not stop approaching. Every day a little bit. Until yesterday, in the hot and humid Cancun, he reached the top. He won the World Cup. One of the great triumphs of the year for Spanish sport, in a minority sport in Spain, but which, due to its spectacular growth in recent years, is Olympic.
